Big Country Home Builders Association's Parade of Homes

East Gate Homes

From when they first started flipping homes in 2016, Kenny and Laura Downey of Eastgate Homes have been working for the people of Abilene to provide them with their very own place to call home. With their first new construction project beginning in 2019, this family-owned business does not shy away from custom houses or spec houses. During the building process,  the Downeys shared that the drafting and designing of the floor plan and the framing for the house is one of their favorite parts of the construction process.

Construction ran in this family before it blossomed into the company it is today. Kenny’s mother taught him how to remodel and paint different things from a very young age – he had even begun working with a cabinet company and general contractor when he was only 13! In 2007, Kenny joined the US Army and served for four years of active duty, two of which were overseas and one serving as a combat veteran in the 142nd infantry in Iraq. Before the two of them began flipping houses together, Laura had worked in advertising for 10 years, and she left a management position at KTXS to earn her license in insurance. This license is used to help the retired, elderly, and disabled as a Medicare benefits consultant.

As this family found their footing in Abilene’s construction environment, they received help from several HBA builders. In 2021 Kenny and Laura managed the completion of four homes and are predicted to double this number for 2022. Working along this duo is their son Ian. He is a builder-in-training who is also involved in other business affairs.

On the weekends, the Downeys can often be found at Fountaingate Fellowship, where they share a passion for serving the Lord however they can. Kenny can be found working as a sound technician and Laura volunteers for Celebrate Recovery.

Anything from remodels, additions to homes, house flipping, or building a house from the ground up, this family has seen it all and will continue to work to server their community and Lord for as long as they possibly can.
